Bob Saget’s fans are angry that he was left out of the annual “in memoriam” tribute at the 2022 Oscars on Sunday, even though he himself was an Oscar winner for a 1977 student film.

It’s possible that Saget wasn’t included because he mostly worked on TV, including in the beloved family sitcom “Full House.” But the respected stand-up comedian directed the 1998 cult comedy film “Dirty Work,” and he scored an Oscar for student film for his black-and-white documentary, “Through Adam’s Eyes,” the New York Post reported.

But if Saget was left out of the annual tribute, the Academy Awards managed to remember other actors and film industry professionals whose deaths, like Saget’s on Jan. 9, became major news events in the past year. That’s because their deaths were sudden and shocking, or because they were major actors, directors or crafts people who were lauded for their contributions to the industry.
For example, Academy Award winner William Hurt was remembered in the tribute, following his death just two weeks ago at age 71. So were other luminaries, such as Sidney Poitier, the first Black actor to win a best actor award. He died in January at age 94.
The Oscars also said farewell to Betty White, directors Peter Bogdanovich, Ivan Reitman and Richard Donner and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, as well as popular character actors Michael K. Williams, Dean Stockwell and Ned Beatty.
Significantly, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was honored. The Ukrainian-born Hutchins was killed on Oct. 21 during the making of the low-budget Western film “Rust” in New Mexico. Hutchins, 42, was fatally shot when “Rust” star Alec Baldwin was handling a Colt .45 during a rehearsal and the gun fired. Hutchins’ death is the subject of a criminal investigation and multiple lawsuits alleging that Baldwin and others in the production acting negligently.
Saget’s death also has attracted widespread interest, speculation and even disturbing conspiracy theories. The well-regarded 65-year-old comedian was found dead in his hotel room in Orlando, Florida.
Authorities in Orange County, Florida, released their final report last week on their investigation into Saget’s death, affirming that he suffered a fatal injury during a fall in his hotel room.
But authorities have said they will probably never know why the comedian fell and hit his head or how his injury occurred, a mystery that troubles his fans. Saget’s death also shocked many because he was known to be in general good health and happily performed a two-hour comedy set in the hours before his death.
However, Saget had mentioned to a showrunner at his comedy that he wasn’t feeling well, his hearing was “off” and he was dealing with the after-effects of COVID-19, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s office.
