MORAGA — Corporal Kevin Mooney, an eight-year veteran with the town police department, died Saturday of COVID-19 and related complications at age 58, authorities said.
In a statement Sunday evening, police said Mooney was a former Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy who worked custody and patrol duties, including city of Orinda patrols.
After joining the police department in 2013, Mooney rose to become its detective. He was a department rangemaster and field training officer, and served as Moraga Police Officers Association president.
Mooney was also a United States Marine Corps veteran who served overseas and saw combat in Iraq, retiring after 29 years in 2010 with the rank of major.
He later founded the department’s holiday-season toy drive, collecting funds and gifts for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
A department statement called Mooney “a fierce advocate for victims and a relentless pursuer of criminals” and “a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
“Our hearts and prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren,” police said in part. “Kevin’s death is an incredible loss and he will be missed by his family, his Moraga Police family and our entire community.”
Funeral services were pending Sunday.
