ALAMEDA
Arnold Brillinger, of Oakland, who was a member of the city of Alameda’s Commission on Persons with Disabilities, passed away May 19 at age 72. Known by family and friends as Arne, he was devoted to his faith, love for teaching and family — including many friends whom he considered family.
Brillinger became wheelchair-bound later in life, but that didn’t stop him from being dedicated to improving the lives of others in the area. He became a voice for disabled people all over Alameda County, serving on the East Bay Paratransit Rider Advisor Committee, as well as Alameda’s commission mentioned above.
Brillinger, who never married, is survived by his sister and her husband, Helene and Robert Austin; nephew, Greg Austin; niece, Brenda Stephenson, and her husband, Walter Stephenson III and their three daughters, Caitlin, Kelci, and Claire. He is also survived by numerous cousins and their families, as well as his families of friends. Brillinger will be laid to rest in Southern California next to his parents at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

ASTI student this year’s Van Sickle Scholarship recipient
Michelle Tandradinata, a senior at the Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), is the 34th annual winner of the $5,000 Ken and Shirley Van Sickle Scholarship.
Michelle is a top student at ASTI and has earned her high school diploma as well as an associate of arts degree from the College of Alameda. She is president of the ASTI Red Cross, a tutor for local students and is active in other school and community activities. Michelle plans to attend UC Berkeley and study chemical engineering.
The scholarship honors Ken and Shirley Van Sickle, two distinguished educators who together devoted more than 50 years to the education of students in Alameda. Scholarship applicants are judged on a combination of academic achievement, leadership and financial need. In addition to Michelle, three other students were selected as scholarship finalists — Michelle Chow, Daniel Lee and Trista Pradhan of ASTI.
“We are very pleased to be able to support Michelle as she pursues her dream of a college education,” said Keith Van Sickle, the Ken and Shirley Van Sickle Scholarship Foundation’s president. “We congratulate all of the scholarship finalists, who were truly outstanding and demonstrated both academic talent and leadership in their schools and community.”
