The pandemic has again put the kibosh on a live Memorial Day celebration at the Veterans Flame of Liberty memorial at the Los Gatos Civic Center, but residents can still visit the memorial to show their appreciation for military veterans.

“It’s a privilege to have such a magnificent veterans memorial in Los Gatos to honor those who served,” says Los Gatos Morning Rotarian Ginger Taylor McDonald. “My husband John passed away in 2020. Paying tribute to his service in both WWII and the Korean War at the Los Gatos veterans memorial has a very special meaning. It is also an endearing reminder of the memories we shared in Los Gatos.” https://honoravet.org.

There’s a new cat coming to town! On June 7, the first Gateway sculpture will be installed in the median at Alberto Way and Highway 9, thanks in large part to Los Gatos Arts Commissioners Tom Spilsbury and Maureen Javey.

“The Gateway Public Art Program began back in 2014 as a way to welcome residents and visitors to Los Gatos,” Javey says. “The final sculpture by artist Matt Babcock was selected from 14 finalists…and it is appropriately of a cat!”

“This is the first of several commissioned artworks that will be installed at key entry points to Los Gatos,” Spilsbury added. “This took a while, but it’s worth it. The commission believes that in addition to a welcome, this will bring meaningful, innovative, creative, world class public art to our community.”  www.losgatosca.gov/352/Arts-and-Culture-Commission

Speaking of cats, The Cats has reopened for indoor seating after doing some pandemic remodeling.  The Cats has been a part of Los Gatos since 1896, when the Cats Roadhouse served as a weigh station for horse-drawn lumber wagons and later as a notorious speakeasy and bordello. it is one of the last remaining roadhouses in the United States, and they serve some tasty barbecue. www.thecatslosgatos.com

Nice to see a lot of activity and happy people at the corner of Santa Cruz Avenue and Highway 9. Between Double D’s and the newly opened Out of the Barrel, the corner is an active welcome to town. www.doubleds.com, www.outofthebarrelbeer.com
