Bicyclists and other friends of Joe Shami — the proclaimed “Legend of Mount Diablo” cyclists — will hold a memorial service for him next month that is likely to include an optional bike ride, possibly up the mountain.

The 86-year-old retired AT&T employee died April 13 from injuries he sustained that morning when he and an SUV collided at about 6:45 a.m. in the roundabout intersection of Pleasant Hill Drive and Olympic Boulevard in Lafayette.

The group “Mount Diablo Cyclists” announced on social media that the memorial service will be held May 1. Plans still are being finalized, according to the post, but those planning to attend were told to anticipate a service beginning around 8:30 a.m. with an opportunity to bike ride at 9 a.m.

Shami earned his legendary status by riding up Mount Diablo at least once a week for 615 consecutive weeks, a streak that started in 2008.
