Former Alameda County Fire Capt. Michael Cysewski, a firefighter in the county for 30 years, died Thursday, officials for the department said.
He was 66.
Rescue workers were unable to revive Cysewski after he collapsed while riding his bike in San Leandro, officials said. An ambulance took him to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley where he was pronounced dead.
“Alameda County Fire Department and Local 55 extend our deepest condolences to his family during this challenging time,” the department said in a statement.
Cysewski began his career with the Castro Valley Fire Department in 1979 and became a captain in 1989, four years before that department was part of a consolidation with Alameda County Fire Department.
He was part of the hazardous materials and water rescue special operations teams before retiring in December 2009.
Cysewski is survived by his fiancee, Sid Tarlow, and his son, Joe.
