John Lewis, the civil rights icon and congressman, has died at the age of 80, according to the Associated Press.
Lewis played a major role in the civil rights movement that was led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was one of 600 protesters who took part in the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The protesters were beaten by police. Later in his life, the Atlanta Democrat won a U.S. House seat in 1986 and served 17 terms, playing a part in numerous pieces of legislation.
The congressman died from pancreatic cancer, according to reports. The photo gallery above shows some of the important moments in a full life.
