The service — which is one of several that will visit be held in three cities in six days — drew family, friends, national and local politicians and celebrities. All gathered to remember the man whose death sparked a global protest and renewed calls for reform to the U.S. justice system.
The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy and in an Associated Press report, he said, “It’s time for us to stand up in George’s name and say, ‘Get your knee off our necks!’”
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and members of Congress, including Reps. Ilhan Omar, Sheila Jackson-Lee and Ayana Pressley attended the service. Celebrities such as Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Ludacris, T.I. and Marsai Martin were also there. According to AP, other memorials will be held in his birth place of Raeford, North Carolina, and in Houston, where Floyd grew up.
