(CNN) — Hundreds attended the funeral of Laurel Griggs, a 13-year-old Broadway and movie actress who died last week after an asthma attack.
Laurel had battled asthma for about two years, her father Andrew Griggs told CNN. On Tuesday, the girl suffered an asthma attack and within two hours, went into cardiac arrest and died.
More than 1,000 attended her funeral Friday at Riverside Memorial Chapel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, her father said, and hundreds more paid their respects online.
Broadway theaters dimmed the lights of their marquees in her honor Friday, Andrew Griggs told CNN.
Laurel made her Broadway debut at 6 years old in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” performing in the role of Polly alongside Scarlett Johansson. From 2013 to 2015, she had a 17-month run in the Tony award-winning musical “Once” as the alternate for the role of Ivanka, daughter of the female lead.
In the past few years, Laurel had moved toward TV and movies. Besides appearing in commercials, she landed a role in Woody Allen’s 2016 film “Café Society” as the niece of Jesse Eisenberg’s character, Bobby, and also appeared on two episodes of “Saturday Night Live.”
In the SNL appearances, on 2017 shows hosted by James Franco and Kumail Nanjiani, Laurel acted alongside cast members Pete Davidson and Alex Moffat. “Last night was the most amazing night of my life!” the girl said in an Instagram post the day after her appearance in Nanjiani’s episode.
