The youngest son of former Warriors star Mitch Richmond has died, the family announced in a statement Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness and pain that we inform you that our youngest son, Shane, unexpectedly passed away last night. We are heartbroken and devastated with this tragic news and will use the strength of our family and the thoughts and prayers of our friends to get through this incredibly difficult time.

“Shane was a ray of light for his two brothers, sister, mom and dad and, at only 20 years of age, had a wealth of friends and admirers who will desperately miss his warm affection and smile.”

No cause of death has been made public.

In 2013, when he was 14, Shane was reported missing in Southern California. His mother, Julie Richmond, told Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators that she believed he ran away from their home in Calabasas, according to CBSLA.com. Shane eventually returned home safely.

Mitch Richmond played three years with the Warriors as part of the “Run-TMC” trio along with Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.

Richmond has three other children. His son Philip played basketball at the University of Oregon from 2014-16.
